Kaplan book turn-in is today!!!

Day 2 of Thirteen Days.  You need to be filling in the Viewing Guide as you watch.  There will NOT be any blank questions when you turn it in!

May 20, 2011

You have work due today!!!

In class you will receive your reward for the hard work you have put in all year, and especially this month.  You know how we watch clips in WHAP, and not whole movies...today we will see a whole film!  We will be watching Thirteen Days (with a viewing guide), a movie looking at the Cuban Missle Crisis from an American POV.  There are several reasons why I show this movie to my WHAP students:
    1.  You have already read about the Cuban Missle Crisis in your textbook.
    2.  The Chapter 32 group (presenting on Latin America) had discussed Fidel Castro, the Bay of Pigs, and the Crisis in
        their presentation.
    3.  You will be taking APUSH next year and will cover this topic.  While we have looked at this event from a broader
worldview in class, you will be looking at the event through an American lens next year in class.
    4.  It's a good movie.

Viewing guide might be taken up for Extra Credit...you never know.  So make sure that you are paying attention or you might miss something!

Today we will be finishing up the STAAR EOC Field test.  If you need additional time, you need to grab a pass and see me during HR to make up your work.  You will have class time to do your assignments that are due next class and take notes from the Kaplan and Stearns books.

Remember, the following assignments are due Friday.  No exceptions!
1.  Boxer Cartoon (late work)
2.  Group Evals for CCPs (late work)
3.  Highlighting/Grading Sample essays
4.  Highlighting/Grading 2010 essay you wrote in class

May 16, 2011

We are recapping the AP Exam: were you prepared, what helped you the most studying, did the strategies work, what did you have trouble with, how should you have answered the CCOT, etc.  After 30 or so minutes we will move on to the new End-of-Course Field test for World History.  Nothing to stress over--we are using this test to see how we stack up to what the State will be looking for in classrooms next year. We will also have the next class to finish up the EOC.

Remember, the following assignments are due Friday.  No exceptions!
1.  Boxer Cartoon (late work)
2.  Group Evals for CCPs (late work)
3.  Highlighting/Grading Sample essays
4.  Highlighting/Grading 2010 essay you wrote in class

May 12, 2011

Today is the AP World History Exam!  Remember, you need to bring with you two number 2 pencils, an eraser, and a watch.  Leave everything you do not need in your locker (especially your electronics!).  Do not report to Homeroom--go directly to the cafegymatorium.

GOOD LUCK!

May 10, 2011

Last day of classes before the AP Exam!  Today we will review test taking strategies, essay writing formulas, and any last minute questions you have on anything.  You again will get the rest of the period to study whatever you need to study by whatever means you need to study.  Make sure you are on task and using your time wisely to study.  If you have any questions, today is the day to ask!

Homework:  STUDY FOR THE AP EXAM!  IT'S ON THURSDAY!

May 6, 2011

Only 2 class periods until the AP Exam!  Make them count.  You are getting the entire class period to study individually, with a group, or with me.  Make sure you are on task and are using your time wisely.  You should all be studying.  If you think you know it all come see me, then we can discuss additional items you might want to take a look at.

Homework:  STUDY FOR THE AP EXAM!  Also, bring a watch into class on Tuesday for a 100!

May 4, 2011

We are going to quickly go over the homework and answer any questions.  Then I am going to return to you your WHAP Mock exam from late March.  You will use your graded scantron and a document from the College Board to find your weak spots in reference to time period and question type.  Then you will get the remainder of the period to review for the exam--I will be here as a resource, but I trust that with the your Mock Exam results and previous test results you will use this time wisely to target the areas you need to know for your exam.

You must have these things in class everday until the AP Exam:
Kaplan Review book (purple cover, you checked these out from me months ago)
Stearns textbook
Mock Scantron
College Board Review and Test Preview Worksheets

Homework:  STUDY FOR THE AP EXAM!

May 3, 2011

I've updated your grades.  This is what will be showing up on your Progress Report.  Check your binder and the graded work pocket if you think you turned something in that is showing up as a zero.  Also, check the WHAP bulletin board to see if your paper is among the nameless.

See the Late Work tab under Quarter 4 if you have questions about your missing work.  Don't throw it way, I might have pity on you.

April 7, 2011 - Lunch

Finish up Chapter 26--Tai Ping Rebellion, Boxer Rebellion, Open Door Policy.  Watch video clip on Opium War.

April 7, 2011

Today we are tackling Chapter 26--the Ottoman Empire, Egypt, the Madhi and Sudan, and Qing China.  We will start with quick review, summaries, and pulling "need to know" facts from the Ottoman, Egypt, and Sudan sections.  We will look at a timeline of the history of opium.  Working in partners, we will debate whether or not China should import opium, with students taking the part of either China or Great Britain.  We will discuss the Tai Ping and Boxer rebellions, Open Door Policy, spheres of influence, as well as analyze several political cartoons.

Here is the cartoon analysis worksheet, in case you didn't get one or lost it:

April 6, 2011 - Lunch

Chapter 25--Latin America.  We will watch a video clip over Simon Bolivar and review the "need to know" information from Chapter 25.  Mostly that is the independence movements, the govt structure of Latin America after independence, and the economics of these new nations.

April 5, 2011

Onward to Imperialism!  Why is Europe taking over the world?  Today you find out.  We will start with defining Imperialism and explaining the 4 motiviations for this movement.  We will compare the Imperialism of the 19th century to Colonization of the 15-18th centuries.  We will compare and contrast Indirect and Direct Rule in imperialized regions by looking at when it is used, who is in charge, the Pros and Cons, cost, effect on the local culture, and historical examples.  We will look at direct rule in India.  Also, we will learn how to analyze political cartoons by looking at a cartoon discussing the Scramble for Africa and comparing it to a map of colonized regions of the continent.

April 1, 2011

Today we have shortened classes due to Kerberos Day.  Instead of moving onto the next chapter, we are going to discuss the midterm.  You will get it back in class and can check your answers and the raw score.  Since the scores were overall....lower than I thought they would be, we are going to investigate whether this was due to misreads of the questions or lack of content knowledge.

You will need to do the following with the tests (which you either finish here or in HR):
1.  underline key words
2.  star misread questions
3.  put smilie faces by missed content questions

March 30, 2011

I'm not here today (I know, let the celebrations begin).  You are starting off class with a 30 minute essay.  You will have the remainder of the period to work with your groups on your CCP.  You will have use of the computer cart.

March 28, 2011

Yea, Industrialization!  We are finishing up the Urban Game in class today.  One of you will be responsible for filling in the notes while I read out loud, while the others will be drawing the town.  After we are done with the game, we will vote on the "prettiest" town and look at the technology, factory systems, and Manchester--the inspiration of the Game.

March 24, 2011

Today we will be tackling the Industrial Revolution!  Arguably the second-most important revolution in history after the Neolithic, this is an important component of both the AP and TAKS exams.  You will be working in partners while we play the Urban Game.  Each partner will have clearly defined roles.

March 22, 2011

Continuing on with Chapter 23, we will discuss the Congress of Vienna and the emergence of 3 political theories that will influence the next two centuries of domestic politics and international relations.
