Winter Holiday Assignment

Hello everyone-

You have assignments over the break.  Hopefully you swung by my room to pick up the packet outside the door.  If not, I should be scanning and posting the article later on this week.  However, I've listed the notecard assignments for the chapter readings below.

TYPO ON THE LETTER!!!   You should read that article before Chapter 19!   You will be tested on this material on the Chapter 19 reading quizzes.

And as always, there will be a reading test over the 3 chapters upon your return to the classroom.


Chapter 15
Social & Cultural Decline of Middle East (art/literature/intellectual shift, agriculture, trade)
Cheng Ho/Zheng He (same guy, different spelling)
Rise of Ming Dynasty
Ming Voyages and Trade (this one is HUGE, it always ends up on the test somehow)
eunuch (add to previous card)
Black Death and it's effects (add to previous card)
Rise of the West (you should be looking at PIRATES info.  make it easy--divide your card into strength/rising & weakness/declining when you write down your characteristics)
Renaissance (definition, main locations of movement, famous people, ideas about art. literature, etc)
Iberian (Spanish and Portugeuse) Monarchies (people, characteristics, etc)
Early exploration and colonization (who was traveling? why were they? where did they end up?)
Ethnocentrism
Polynesian people and migrations (ESP, etc)
Maoris (ESP)


Chapter 16
Renaissance (add) - include HUMANISM on the card
Niccolo Machiavelli
Northern Renaissance
Gutenberg Printing Press (include inventor's name on card, with location, year, what's so special about it, etc)
Protestant Reformation (year, location and spread, causes of, leaders, new churches/branches of protestantism, etc)
Martin Luther
Catholic Reformation (year, location/s, etc - how did the Church react to the Protestant movement?  what did they do to bring people back to the Church?  what did they do to improve the Church?)
Catholic/Protestant relations in Europe (should DEFINITELY include all the italicized stuff in "The End of Catholic Unity" section)
Commericial Revolution (date.  each paragraph states and explains a reason for increased European trade, as well as the costs of it--for example, witch hunts.  find it, summarize it on your card.)
Scientific Revolution (rough date range, locations, definition -- make sure that you include information from the whole section, not just the first 2 paragraphs)
Important figures of the Scientific Revolution (organize on card: name, location, field of study (if stated or you can figure it out), and discovery/contribution.  include them all on the same card, otherwise you'll have hundreds)
Absolute Monarchy (make sure you give examples)

Mercantilism
Glorious Revolution (who [was involved]? what [is it]? when [did it happen]? where [did it happen]? why [did it happen]? how [did it happen]? what [was the outcome]?)
Parliamentary Monarchy (with examples)
Enlightenment (rough date range, locations, definition -- make sure that you include information from the whole section, not just the first 2 paragraphs)

Western Trade Ports/Harbors/Enclaves

Core Nations vs Dependent/Periphery Nations (examples of each, Economic policies and products of each.  General Social and Political characteristics.  Look in both the "imbalances in world trade" and "a system of international inequality" sections.)
International Chinese Trade: 15th-18th century (include ESP, technology characteristics)
International Japanese Trade: 15th-18th century (see above)
European Trade in India
Francisco Pizarro
Spanish/Portugeuse Colonization (locations, dates, methods of colonization, expansion of exploration, etc)
French/British North America (PIRATES, dates, locations, methods of colonization, expansion, who was colonizing/moving to N.American colonies, etc.  MAKE SURE TO DIFFERENCIATE BETWEEN FRENCH AND ENGLISH CHARACTERISTICS)
Boers
Seven Years' War (who [fought]? where [did they fight]? when [did they fight]? what [started the war]?  why [are they fighting]? what [is the outcome of the war]?)  THIS INFORMATION IS IN SEVERAL SECTIONS!
European Colonization in Asia/Africa (you need to be specific on who colonizes/sets up posts where.  Set you card up by county.  Example:  Great Britian-blahblahblah.  Spain-kdjfakkd, France-kajfd;kakdj, etc.  YOU NEED TO TALK ABOUT THE TRADING COMPANIES IN THIS CARD!)
Trade Imbalance (we will do this in class.  have the card ready)
